Perdido Key
Perdido Key is a very popular vacation spot, especially for families and others who prefer the quieter beach experience. Named by the Spainards, Perdido Key translates to “Lost Island” and remains a Southern sanctuary for people and wildlife of all kinds. Perdido Key is located on the far western corner of Pensacola and is unique, covering both Florida and Alabama. It is a 16 mile barrier island with snow white beaches and crystal blue waters, with almost 60 percent of it located in federal or state parks. It is one of the last remaining unblemished stretches of wilderness in our Florida Panhandle, which makes it a wonderful place for a true beach adventure! There are 2 main parks on Perdido Key, The Gulf Islands National Seashore Park and Perdido Key State Park, which provide ample outdoor recreation opportunities including swimming, surfing, boating, fishing, hiking, picnicing, seashell collecting or just sinking into the warm sand and breathing the salt air! Also, Perdido Key now has four public access points distributed along it’s gorgeous coastline, all of which are free to use.
Perdido Key is abundant with gulf front condos, making it a wonderful location for your vacation home or investment property. Visitors, part-time residents and those that have made it their home enjoy a wide variety of restaurants, shops and marinas, and even an 18-hole Arnold Palmer Championship public golf course.
Big Lagoon State Park
With its long sand spit separating the lagoon from the ocean, Big Lagoon is a beachcombing paradise.
Big Lagoon State Park sits on the northern shoreline of its namesake, Big Lagoon, which separates the mainland from Perdido Key and the Gulf of Mexico. Natural communities, ranging from saltwater marshes to pine flatwoods, attract a wide variety of birds, especially during the spring and fall migrations. Beaches, shallow bays, nature trails, and open woodlands offer splendid opportunities for nature study. The park also beckons visitors with opportunities for camping, swimming, fishing, boating, canoeing, and hiking. Crabbing in the shallow waters of Big Lagoon is a popular activity as well. The West Beach picnic area, shaded by pines and oaks, is just the place to enjoy a relaxing meal.
Of course, if you prefer to eat indoors, there are a number of wonderful choices for you on Perdido Key. The Jellyfish Restaurant has a full bar and a wide selection of seafood dishes, including sushi. The Perdido Key Oyster Bar and Marina has a gorgeous waterfront view and amazing oysters and other assorted seafood. Yjere are also a couple of more casual eateries on the water, including The Sunset Grille, a great place to pull up in your boat and watch the sun set out over the beautiful water.
